Lingerie Style Glossary
Choosing the right style bra to suit your size and shape is essential in achieving the correct fit. With a wide variety of styles available, it can often get a little confusing. To make the process a little easier we have provided information about the different bra styles available. It is advisable to have a wide array of styles and colours in your lingerie wardrobe so ensure the perfect look for any occasion.
A Padded or moulded Contour cup has a pre determined shape created by the fabric. These bras can add definition whilst providing a rounded and symmetrical shape with the elimination of nipple contours. A Contour bra with a high centre will provide support for a larger bust.
Push Up Bras
The Push Up bra is designed to create cleavage by pushing the breast tissue up and towards the centre of the bust. The distinct feature of the Push Up bra is its shaped pad positioned in the bottom of the cup. A low plunge in the centre of the cup will provide the greatest cleavage while a higher centre provides greater coverage and support. In some cases this pad is removable giving the wearer the option of converting the Push Up bra into a ‘Padded bra’.
Balconette Cup Bras
The cups are cut shallower and have less breast coverage on a Balconette style bra. The underwire is slightly shorter and the straps are positioned wide on the shoulders to provide a look of fullnes. In most cases the cup is cut 2.54cm above the nipple. Balconette cups are cut horizontally across the bustline with some being slightly curved to push the breast tissue towards the centre. This style of bra will provide an uplifting effect with padded Balconette bras enhancing bust size.
Full Cup Bras
A Full Cup bra provides support and coverage as the fabric covers most of the breast. Women will a fuller bust who desire coverage from their bra will benefit from this style.
Soft Cup/Triangle Bras
Ideal for an A or B cup, a Soft Cup bra does not have any underwire within the bra, making it very a comfortable choice.
Convertible & Strapless Bras
Convertible and Strapless bras have detachable straps that can either be removed or repositioned depending on style of clothing it is required to be worn under. This may include strapless, halter-neck, racer-back or asymmetrical tops or dresses. Most strapless and convertible bras possess a thicker band across the back, padded cups and a high centre to provide support. Some strapless and convertible bras are available with a ‘plunge’ style centre, however this style will provide less support and is not ideally suited for sizes larger than a C cup.
